The Catholic Church in Brunei was
formerly under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Miri
(then known as the Diocese of Miri-Brunei), in
neighbouring Sarawak, East Malaysia. On 22 February
1998, by a papal decree issued in November 1997, the
Church in Brunei was constituted an apostolic
prefecture, with Msgr. Cornelius Sim as its first
prefect. After seeing through 7 years of steady growth
and maturity, the Holy See elevated the prefecture to an
apostolic vicariate on 20 October 2004, with Msgr. Sim
as the first vicar, carrying the dignity of a titular
bishop.

The Catholic Church in Brunei comprises of
three main parishes, namely the Church of Our Lady of
the Assumption in the capital city of Bandar Seri
Begawan, St. John's Church in Kuala Belait and the
Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in
Seria. Besides the population in the main parishes,
there are also a number of faithful in the districts of
Temburong and Tutong.
The resident Catholic
population is mainly ethnic Chinese as well as a good
number from the several indigenous minorities. There is
a sizeable transient population from the Philippines as
well as from other parts of the world making up the bulk
of the Catholic community.
At this present
moment, the pastoral needs of the Church in Brunei are
administered by 3 diocesan priests, with a seminarian under formation. There are
also a number of pastoral workers working in the
Vicariate.
The Franciscan Sisters of Sarawak
used to work in the Vicariate and there was even one
local sister from that congregation. Since her demise,
there has only been one other local sister who is with
the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and currently
serving in the USA.
The Church in Brunei is
gradually coming to grips with its new-found identity,
and strives to align itself with the needs of the local
community while ensuring the carrying on of the mission
of Christ in this
country.
